(1 in a multiple picture album) This view is from the old Conway Ranch in the Mono Basin just east of the Sierra Nevada Range. In the center you can see a portion of Mono Lake. In the background are the peaks around Mammoth Mountain. Yosemite National Park is just a short drive away to the west. The 17,000 plus acres of ranch land are now part of the California Conservancy to prevent development. I've talked with travelers from Europe who find this sort of empty expanse one of their favorite features of the American West.
